Good hosters should do that for you automatically every night.

yeah they do, but normally you can't download them. I would always do that, additionally.
So mysqldumper and Pearl cronjobs should be a good idea, if you always control if mysqldumper has done its job, because sometimes automatic cronjobs fail.
